A hearing aid battery's life depends on the type of hearing aid that is used by the individual. Analog hearing aids do not take as much energy as digital hearing aids, which have many more electric parts in them. In addition, the smaller versions of hearing aids cannot fit a large battery in them and so the battery will have to be replaced more often than the hearing aids that hold larger batteries. In the past, mercury batteries were used. Today, zinc air batteries are used more often and have about twice the hearing aid battery life than the mercury batteries. The zinc batteries come with a colored tab on them which keeps the air from making contact with the zinc in the battery. The color indicates the size of the battery. Once the air makes contact with the zinc it begins reacting and creating zinc oxide. It is this reaction that creates the energy in the battery. Tips One of the best ways to extend a hearing aid battery's life is to buy a rechargeable battery. Rechargeable batteries will usually last about two years before another set has to be bought. Although the batteries are more expensive in the first place, the rechargeable hearing aid battery's life more than helps to make the investment worthwhile to the individuals who use them. Rechargeable batteries usually cost about forty dollars for a pair of batteries. The charger can either be a pen charger or a card charger. The pen chargers cost about seventy dollars and the card chargers cost about one hundred thirty dollars. Because the hearing aid battery life of a rechargeable battery is two years, even with the initial cost being at most one hundred seventy dollars, that equals out to about seven dollars per month which is affordable by anyone's standards. After that, the cost goes down to under two dollars per month. Regular zinc air batteries usually come in a pack of six, so that the individual usually needs about a pack and a half for the month. The zinc air batteries have a hearing aid battery life of about five to seven days, depending on the size of the battery. Each pack costs about four dollars, so individuals will spend about six to eight dollars per month on batteries. One way to make sure that individuals get as much use out of the battery as possible, a tester can be bought for about eleven dollars. Many of these testers are able to be attached to a keychain so that they can be with the individual at all times. That way they can test the battery to see if it is still good before throwing it away, thus saving them money.
